Hounoux is a small farming community of around 140 people. It sits on the watershed that determines whether rainwater goes to the Mediterranean or the Atlantic. The nearest bakery and butcher are in Belveze. 30 minutes from Carcassonne airport. We are located on the GR7, the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. We are 20 minutes from the historic city of Mirepoix. Warmest day in 2026 was 40.4 degrees. We occasionally see snow in the winter, but it never lasts for long.
We have a multitude of wildlife, with different species of birds of prey, mostly buzzards, eagles and vultures. There are wild boar on occasions, deer, badgers, martens. We have two species of bat and all sorts of reptiles, snakes, lizards, gekko, salamanders, etc. Preying mantis, stick insects, amazing spiders and beetles. We have never seen any harmful snakes. In the spring, we have at least six species of orchids covering our grassed areas. We avoid mowing the grass until they are finished. The three main farmers plant mainly sunflowers, wheat, barley and oilseed rape. The vineyards are on the flatter land.
