Chize is a small town (around 800 inhabitants) with a great boulangerie, cafe/bar/restaurant, pharmacy, doctors surgery, garage, small weekly market, hairdresser, mini-mart and a range of social facilities. Supermarket is 7 miles away in Aulnay which also hosts a large weekly market.
The town sits on the boundary between the regions of Charente Maritime and Deux Sevres, about 40 miles from the Atlantic coast in a heavily forested region, just south of the Marais Poitevin. Sample the local delicacies, wines and pineaux or travel a short way to the best cognac houses.
The Boutonne river is teaming with trout and the area is served by an array of carp lakes. Beautiful La Rochelle and the Il de Re are favourite haunts on the coast and the historic towns of Niort, Aulnay, St Jean d’Angely, Saint and Cognac are all in easy reach.
